15th Time's a Charm? Poker Player Seeks First WSOP Main Event Cash After 14 Misses

Level 4 : Blinds 300/500, 500 ante
DJ Mackinnon
DJ Mackinnon

DJ Mackinnon has entered his 15th consecutive WSOP Main Event, but he's seeking his first cash in poker's World Championship.

The longtime grinder has found success over the years in various tournaments. But the Main Event isn't one of them, although that could change this week. Mackinnon took his seat at the start of the Day 1d session on Sunday, the final Day 1 flight. Over 7,500 players had registered four days in, with registration still open through two levels on each Day 2 session.

Mackinnon, who has over $1.2 million in live tournament cashes recorded by The Hendon Mob database, would like to be one of likely around 1,500 players who will finish in the money.

Joseph Biegler raised to 1,000 from middle position.

After Wilson Paiva limp-called on the button, Filippo Ragone raised to 7,000 from the small blind. Biegler called, Paiva folded.

The flop hit 523, and Ragone continued for another 6,000. Biegler shoved all in over the top for 28,300.

Raggone folded.

Wrenn Can't Get a Read on Franklin

Level 4 : Blinds 300/500, 500 ante

David Wrenn bet 4,100 from the big blind on a board of 102810 before Ryan Franklin raised to 12,000 in early position.

"I'm going to need a minute. I think you might have me crushed. You're a much better player than I am," Wrenn said as he apologized to his tablemates for taking so long to make a decision.

Wrenn eventually moved all in for his last 30,000, and Franklin snap-called.

David Wrenn: 103All in
Ryan Franklin: 22

Wrenn had trips, but Franklin turned over a full house. The river was the 5, and Wrenn was sent to the rail.

"I just couldn't put you on a hand," Wrenn told Franklin as he went around the table to shake everyone's hand before making his exit.

Taken on the River

Level 4 : Blinds 300/500, 500 ante

Seeing an under-the-gun raise to 1,000 from Ryoya Sumie ahead of him, Liran Betito three-bet to 2,400 one seat to Sumie's left. The action folded back to Sumie, who called.

When the dealer spread a Q68 flop, Sumie check-called a continuation bet of 1,500 before the Q turn checked through.

The 4 completed the board, and Sumie elected to lead out, putting 6,000 into the pot. Betito wasted no time at all returning his cards to the dealer.

Chun Catches the Turn vs Wilke

Level 4 : Blinds 300/500, 500 ante

Dennis Wilke raised from the button, and only Chun Wong called from the small blind.

The flop came down QQ3, and Wong check-called a bet of 1,200 from Wilke.

Both players checked the J turn before the 7 completed the board. Wong led out for 4,000, and Wilke put in the call.

Wong tabled AJ for jacks and queens, which was good enough to earn him the pot as Wilke mucked.

Thin Value Gone Wrong

Level 4 : Blinds 300/500, 500 ante

Philip Chun on the button and Darren Lacy from the big blind were heads-up to the turn with the board reading K643 and just under 10,000 in the middle.

Lacy checked to Chun who tossed out a bet of 5,000, and Lacy put in the call.

On the Q river, Lacy checked again to Chun who put out enough to ask for the remainder of Lacy's 24,700 stack. After a minute's tank, Lacy shrugged and threw a chip into the middle to call off for his tournament life.

Darren Lacy: 64 All in
Philip Chun: K7

Chun got greedy with top pair but Lacy flopped two pair and made the right call on the river to double his stack.

Coursey's River Shove Forces a Fold

Level 4 : Blinds 300/500, 500 ante

It was a battle of the blinds with Alexander Kostritsyn in the small and Jason Coursey in the big, with a pot of 1,000.

The flop came 8A6. Kostritsyn led with 500 and Coursey continued to tag along with his fellow blind.

On the turn Q, Kostritsyn tried again and fired 1,500. Coursey didn't let go, wanting to see the last card.

The A river fell, and after a check, Coursey looked at his chips and realized he had 5,100 behind. Shrugging, he picked it all up and shoved it all in.

Kostritsyn looked at him briefly before throwing his hand in the muck.
